1 Cord Stripes
Plain weave fabrics with thick cords at regular distances apart. Two beams are used, and the best qualities are often dented one in a dent with the cord ends crammed, such as 30-in., 100 yards, 40 ends and 80 picks per inch, 50's T., 50's W., with 12 cords of 2/40's per inch, three in a dent. Imitation cord stripes are made in which the same yarn as used for the ground is used, but with two or more ends working together. One beam is usual for this style. -

9 Bedford Cords
Fabrics having cords or ribs in the direction of the warp produced by interweaving the weft in plain or twill order with alternate groups of warp threads. The ribs may be emphasised by the addition of wadding or stuffing warp threads. Generally woven in dobby looms. All cotton, all wool or mixed. A standard cotton cloth is made 36-in., 144 X 100 per inch, 40's/50's, with 20's wadding ends. The diagram gives the weave. When the face ends X are weaving plain in one section, the face ends are lifted in the other section, this is for two picks, and then the weave is reversed. The plain ends are separated in the reed. ▪ Another cloth is made 30-in. from 24's warp, 36's weft, with every seventh cord made from coloured yarn. A heavy cloth is made for use as riding breeches in many qualities. Also made with wool yams. The illustration (A) shows a fancy Bedford cord for dress goods. There are ten padding cords to the inch, as shown by the broader cord stripes. These dress goods styles are made from a two-fold warp and single weft, all Egyptian yams. Fabric B is a three-colour fancy weave. The term " London Cord " is given to a heavy cotton Bedford Cord, woven with a 2 X 1 twill face. One quality is 88 X 80 per inch, 16/20's. Frequently padding ends are used to give prominence to the cords. Bedford Cord shirtings are made from the 144 X 110 cloth, usually 33/34-in. and with coloured stripes -

12 Muslin
This name is derived from the City of Mossoul, where the fabric was first made (Marco Polo), (see Mosolin). It is a very light, open plain weave cloth used for summer dresses and made in numerous qualities from super yarns, such as 52 ends and 60 picks per inch, 80's warp, 70's weft. Hair muslin has fine cord stripes. Crammed muslin is the same as hair muslin, but two single threads weave together to form cords. Shirting muslins are heavier, such as 90 ends and 88 picks per inch, 90's warp, 100's weft; 80 ends and 86 picks per inch, 80's warp, 100's weft. Cambric muslins are between the light muslins and shirting muslins, about 70 ends and 56 picks per inch, 60's warp, 80's weft. Paper muslins are made about this quality. All muslins are bleached, dyed or printed in a soft finish. Book muslin and Tarleton muslin are not muslins, but hard-finished plain cloths Muslins were not always plain, but had silk or even gold stripes woven in when made in Mossoul, but as cotton grew plentifully around the town and the women could spin yarns of great fineness, the cotton yarns gradually superseded silk. -

19 Liteau
In French mill parlance a narrow stripe along the selvedge of the cloth left undyed. After taking the cloth from the loom a narrow cord was sewn tightly along each selvedge, preventing the dye from penetrating the fabric and preserving the original colour. For scarlet, blue, and purple cloths the liteau was white, on green cloth it appeared yellow, and in violets a light red. The liteau served as a guide to the quality of the cloth. At the present time liteau means the blue and red weft stripes which are found on certain linen tablecloths. During the 14th century damask tablecloths were also made with such weft stripes. -
